are Google Nexus One and LG P500 Optimus good?

with the nexus one the power button becomes unresponsive after awhile and its a pain turning it on. you can get cyanogen mod and enable the tracker ball to activate the phone from sleep but does not turn on phone.

btw putting the mod on your nexus or any other smart phone voids the warranty.I am looking for a decent smart phone that doesn't cost too much (around $ 200 or less) with focus on signal receiving, GPS, and good camera.

1. Can I use GPS without data plan (like the real GPS)?
2. Is browsing with these phone fast? I know that there are certain version of androids that are really slow in browsing.

I am new to using smart phone, so I'll really appreciate it if you guys can suggest any good one with decent price.
I am using T-mobile, and I want to be able to use the phone when travelling in another country as well.
